Hi, It’s been a minute…

Changing the world is never an easy thing, mostly because it is the work of changing people. And people don’t change their hearts and minds because they are told. They change because they feel their hearts move. They change because they can no longer live with the fear of the “other,” the hatred they have been taught. They change because they see peeks of a new world being born around them and know that change is the only constant in our universe. Today, our society, our island and our world is badly in need of change-makers and heart-shifters.
That’s why In Cultured Company is here.
Since our founding in 2018, In Cultured Company has been in the business of creating the space for that intimate transformation. We create space for education, yes, but also for that change of heart, for that move towards a different way of being in the world. ICC is, in the words of my colleague Yaira Matos, an experimental third space, both Haitian and Dominican, where the lines in the soil that colonizers have drawn do not define us. Through a Racial Equity lens, we confront the bits of us that are difficult to confront: our privilege, our silences, our inaction, our apathy, our fears. Through a Healing Justice lens, we nurture everything that keeps us going on a daily basis: our joy, our connections, our similarities, our desires for a different kind of future for our island and for ourselves. Our yearning powers our actions. Our desire for a better world powers our culture-building, resilience, and healing.
With this twice a month newsletter, we want to re-invite you to be a part of our journey. We are on a mission to build community and to make our organization grow, thrive, and reach the people it needs to reach. Together we can collectively build the kind of future all of us, and in particular our island-kin, deserve.
We are aware of the challenges of our present, but unafraid and undaunted. Together, we will build a future of love, liberation, and belonging. Together we will win.

In early March of 2024, the In Cultured Company Team held an in-person retreat in Mystic, CT. Believe it or not, the ICC team is entirely remote and spread across THREE (yes THREE!) different cities. We have been working together for more than a year, but have never met in person.
This was finally our change to literally make it out the group chat!
During the retreat, we were able to identify the strategies of Narrative Change and Grassroots Capacity Building as the key strategies to further our organization’s mission and vision.
